Diana Fernandez of The Asia Foundation (left), a former Peace Corps volunteer in Mongolia, also attended, together with Chris Leahy of Peabody Energy; Dr. Alicia Campi, president of The Mongolia Society; Ms. Zhen Gong Cross, head of Mongolian Affairs at the International Trade Administration, US Department of Commerce; Mr. Michael Cox of Meridian International; and Steve Saunders, president of the NAMBC among others (not shown in photo). As a souvenir of the occasion, Ms. Ambrose presented the Governor with a book of photos of Washington, DC, signed by all the luncheon participants.
Governor Erdenebat was in the US capital at the start of a three week visit to the US, sponsored by the US State Department's International Visitor Program, at the invitation of US Ambassador Mark Minton. Several of the most important sites for mining development are located in Umnugobi province, including the Oyu Tolgoi project.

Kh. Bekhbat is new Mongolian Ambassador to US
Khasbazaryn Bekhbat, 57, is the new Ambassador of Mongolia to the US. A veteran of 35 years of diplomatic and government service, Bekhbat replaces former Ambassador Ravdan Bold, who was appointed director of the Mongolian Central Intelligence Agency by Prime Minister Sanj Bayar.
One of his country’s most experienced and distinguished diplomats, Ambassador Bekhbat had been State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since April 2006. Previously, he was Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN and other International Organizations in Geneva and Ambassador to Switzerland for five years. Bekhbat served twice as Ambassador-at-Large.
Previously in his career, Bekhbat served as Ambassador to France, Permanent Representative of Mongolia to UNESCO, as Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs and as Foreign Policy Advisor to His Excellency P. Ochirbat, the first President of Mongolia.
Ambassador Bekhbat graduated in 1973 from the Institute of International Relations in Moscow. In 1990, he received his PhD. in history from the Academy of Social Sciences in Moscow. A native of Ulaanbaatar, he and his wife have three children. He has received the Order of the Polar Star and other decorations.
President George W. Bush accepted Ambassador Bekhbat’s credentials on April 9, 2008 in a private ceremony in the Oval Office of the White House attended by Bekhbat’s wife, Mrs. Jamsran Gerelmaa, and various US and Mongolian officials.
In his remarks, President Bush said that US citizens “applaud Mongolia for its dramatic success over the past 17 years in developing democratic institutions and a market economy” and that the signing of MCA Compact “reaffirm our commitment to support Mongolia’s further development”. The President noted that “Mongolia is taking on a larger role in promoting democracy in its region and around the world by becoming a leader in organizations like Community of Democracies and the Asia Pacific Democracy Partnership.”

Registration is now open for our 11th annual Investors Conference & Prime Minister's Roundtable, September 17-18-19-20, at the Kempinski Khan Palace Hotel in Ulaanbaatar. Speakers and panels will look forward and back, celebrating the 35th anniversary of Canada-Mongolia diplomatic relations and also analyzing the policy implications of the June 29 parliamentary elections and likely policies of the new government. Other topics to be discussed include mining and natural resources development, transportation, real estate, work force education and training, and health care.
Our yearly Investors Conference is the longest-running annual international investors' conference continuously held in Mongolia since the end of the Socialist period. All interested persons are welcome, including non-members. We are limiting registrations to only 120 participants, first come, first served, in order to keep the conference on a scale that facilitates informal discussion and personal interaction.
One of the annual highlights is the private and informal Roundtable discussion with the Prime Minister at his official residence, Ikh Tenger, a tradition started in1998 and continued by all Prime Ministers since then. The program includes dialogue with leading Mongolian government, parliamentary and political leaders. The program starts with a reception on the evening of Wednesday, September 17, and concludes on Friday afternoon, September 19.
The registration deadline is September 5, 2008, after which a US$50 surcharge is imposed. For NAMBC Members only, the second delegate from the same company or organization may register at a 20% discount, third and all additional delegates from the same company at a 30% discount. BCM members may register at the same rate as NAMBC members.

CITY OF CALGARY HONORS THREE IN "WHITE HAT" CEREMONY -- At our 18th Annual Meeting in Calgary, AB, in April, the City of Calgary honored two Mongolian officials and NAMBC Chairman Ed Story in a traditional "White Hat" ceremony. Receiving brand new, snow-white Stetsons were (left to right) His Excellency Dr. D. Gotov, Mongolia's Ambassador to Canada, His Excellency Lu. Bold, Chairman of the Mineral Resources and Petroleum Authority of Mongolia (MRPAM), and Ed Story, Chairman & CEO of the NAMBC and President & CEO of SOCO International. To Ed's right is Peter Wallis, Honorary Consul of Mongolia for Alberta Province. To mark the 35th anniversary of Canada-Mongolia relations, the three men were honored for their leadership in natural resource development and for helping to improve bilateral relations between Canada and Mongolia. Previous recipients of Calgary's "White Hat" include both Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, and Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales.
